In a very tragic incident one male wild elephant has been electrocuted in Udalguri district last night on December 20.According to information the 25 years old male wild elephant died at Singrimari village near Khagrabari in Udalguri district (Assam) when it had come into contact with loosely hanging 11 KV power line while it was being chased away by villagers. So far several wild elephants have been killed in Assam due to electrocution posing threat to wild elephant population. In most of the villages the high tension live wires hanging loose at just eight to ten feet height are like death traps not only to wild elephants but to human beings also.Wildlife activists of the district expressed anger at the frequent deaths of wild elephants and human beings for the irresponsible attitudes of ASEB. Wildlife activists of the district and Udalguri District Journalist Union demanded Forest Department to lodge FIR against ASEB for their faults. Its need mentioning that so far 11 wild elephants died in this district during 2017 only.Dr.Jahan Ahmed,a Guwahati based veterinary expert presently in Udalguri said that the elephant was in musth which was unnoticed.Jayanta K Dashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09120992958125663125noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2845960274964425842.post-15230398330861117382017-12-18T10:59:00.000+05:302017-12-18T10:59:04.887+05:30Stray Orang NP tigress creates havoc at Rowta in Assam

The tigress sneaking out from Rajib Gandhi Orang National Park creating havoc in and around Rowta area in Udalguri district since November 11 has been resented by people as well as wildlife loving people of the district. The tigress has already killed five cows and six numbers pf pings at Borobazar village near Rowta town. People are terrified because of its presence in the locality for more than a month as they have been compelled to stay inside their houses during evening times not to speak of venturing into their paddy fields. The frustrated villagers might kill the tigress if not send back to its habitat urgently. It needs mentioning that another female tiger with two cubs was poisoned to death in the village situated close to the Orang NP last year on January 2.Another tiger from the national park was spotted at nearby Badagaon Majuli during last week of January last year showing regular movements of tigers from Orang NP.Forest department or NTCA could not track the tiger but estimated that it had gone north towards Bhutan or Arunachal Pradesh after examination of its pug marks.According to MK Sarma,FO, Dhansiri Forest Division,Udalguri forest department has taken all possible steps locally to track the tigress which is identified as No.F 23 of Orang National Park as seen from the camera trapping photos dated November 25.Three cages along with baits were placed at three spots in the area on November 15 to capture it alive. But the tigress evaded the traps.Again on December 12 recently, another cow was eaten by the tigress indicating its presence in the area. The incident created panic among villagers. When asked on their failure to track or capture the tigress,DFO Sarma said that three groups with four forest personnel in each group have been working day and night but the tigress had found it most suitable to hide in the nearby JFMC forest. "Two domestic Kunki elephants from Orang National Parks have also been pressed into service to track the tigress",Sarma said.It is also learned that Dr. Daoharu Boro,a veterinary expert from CWRC,Kokrajhar has been working hard to tranquilize the tiger for the last two weeks. He has been observing any possible movement of the tigress from the top of the three masangs constructed by the forest department."The tigress is very clever not to venture into the cages moreover she deliberately avoided the cage doors while trying to hunt the baits. She must be a tigress experienced with cages or traps",said DFO Sarma.

Dipen Boro, social activist and vice president of ABSU central committee, who is a resident of Rowta area said that Assam forest department deploy highest level expertise and mechanism to track the tigress immediately and to push or trans locate it to Orang NP. Otherwise she might be killed by antisocial elements or even by irate villagers carrying bad names to Udalguri and Darrang districts."The villagers cannot wait for a indefinite period.State forest department and NTCA must pay attention to the safety of the tigress as well as villagers immediately",Boro said.

The unfortunate and tragic deaths of two wild elephants in just two days in Udalguri district in Assam (India) have raised serious concern among wildlife loving people of Udalguri. In the first incident.a seven years old male wild elephant was found dead at Jorapukhuri village near Hatigar tea garden on November 20.The baby elephant was found lying dead in a drain in turtle. According to information village people were chasing a herd of wild elephant numbering more than fifty the previous night. While running away the baby fell in a watery drain and succumbed due to stampede.According to DFO Udalguri the incident occurred while people were chasing wild elephants after forest personnel had left at midnight on November 19.In another incident a thirty years old female wild elephant found dead at Bharla river bed near Bongurum in Udalguri district on November 20.According to an eye witness, the dead female wild elephant bore several grievous injury marks on her body.MK Sarma,DFO, Dhansiri Forest Division,Udalguri told that the front leg of the elephant was found fractured and the tail tip was chopped off causing profuse bleeding resulting its death before veterinary treatment could be administered. The DFO further said that due to non availability of emergency veterinary rescue team in the district they had to wait support from Kaziranga NP,Manas NP or from Guwahati Zoo which take much time."Even tranquilizing a wild animal is difficult here because of the absence of a shooter. Local veterinary doctors are not trained in shooting with a dirt gun.Short term training courses of shooting for local veterinarians would solve some problem",he said.So far 19 wild elephants have been killed or died in Assam during last ninety days only.Seven wild elephants died in Udalguri district in 2017.
