Retaliation:
More than hundred wild elephants attacked the Central Nursery of forest department at Switch Gate near Compartment No.4.inside Khalingduar Reserve Forest in Udalguri district (Assam) last night causing extensive damage to the buildings and walls under construction. Interestingly,a few wild elephants had been roaming in the nursery the previous night on May 14.In order to chase them away forest personal resorted to firing causing minor injury to some of the herd.Being teased that way all the wild elephants numbering more than hundred attacked forest personal in retaliation forcing them to retreat to the range office.

Workshop on transit of Venus 2012 at Kalaigaon
On the occasion of National Technology Day,2012, a workshop was held at Kalaigaon Girls High School on May 11 to discuss latest technological developments and to make people aware of the transit of Venus to be occurred on June 6. The programme was organised by the school itself in association with Aryabhatta Science Centre,Kalaigaon block. The workshop started at school play ground at 11 AM which was conducted by senior teacher Gajendra Saharia. All the students and teachers attended the discussion where ASC block co-ordinator JK Das demonstrated the use of latest scientific equipments like GPS (Global Position System),Solar Filter etc. On the occasion co-ordinator Das explained about the need of studying basic science so as to enable students and teachers the use of science in everyday life. According to him basic understanding of science is very much essential in our modern life. The basic knowledge of science could very much eradicate so many social evils like blind belief and superstitions etc. According to him lack of basic scientific knowledge have been posing several social menaces like witch hunting,dowry,rapid growth of population etc.
He further request students and teachers to to watch the great celestial event of this century “Transit of Venus,2012” to be occurred on the morning of June 6 as per advices given by Vigyan Prasar and Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers Association,Guwahati Planetarium. He handed over a set of related packet of watching material to the school. Science teacher Pramod Saharia and student Kabita Tanti also spoke a few words on the occasion

National workshop on transit of Venus 2012 concludes at Guwahati planetarium
The national level orientation workshop on transit of Venus,2012 which had been started in Guwahati Planetarium on May 7 concluded on May 9. 50 numbers of participants from various districts of Assam and from other states of NE took part in the workshop for creating awareness among people regarding the safe awtching of the great celestial event on June 6 from Sun rise till 10.19 AM. Experts from Mumbai and Kolkata briefed the participants on all the three days demonstrating methods to develop low cost equipments for the observation of the transit of Venus.
On the second day,UN Deka,secretary,PRAG delivered speech on transit of Venus while Sandeep Baruah, Scientist- D of Vigyan Prasar,Govt of India conducted a special workshop on “Amateur Radio” where he demonstrated latest 'HAM RADIO' activities and its importance in NE Indian states.On the concluding day ie on May 9, Dr.Chandrarekha Mahanta,working president of PRAG conducted a special class on “Cosmology”.
The closing ceremony was held at 2 PM in the conference hall of Guwahati Planetarium. HC Dutta,Director of Guwahati Planetarium & Director of ASTEC; Dr.Anil Goswami,president PRAG; Kabyashree Mahanta,Dy Secy,Science & Technology, Assam; UN Deka,secretary PRAG; senior scientists of the country Prof.Sabyasashi Chatterjee and TV Bhankatesh of Vigyan Prasar, Govt. of India and Babul Borah,Curator,Guwahati Planetarium etc attended the closing ceremony as distinguished guests. Director Dutta declared that a week long workshop would be arranged at planetarium with more “Do yourself” type science activities for the promotion of science in the state. It needs mention that on June 6, Venus will pass across the face of the Sun for the second and last time this century. People can see the great celestial event from sunrise till 10.19 AM. Next transit would occur in December in 2117.
