Setting an example of determination for a peaceful community living,all the leading citizens, politicians, journalists,representatives of various organisations of Udalguri district namely- Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Asom SahityaSabha, ABSU,AASU, AJYCP,AASA, AGSU,AKRSU, AMSU, ABWWF, Bengali Students Federation,Bodoland Students Federation etc resolved to stay away from violence and to maintain communal harmony among various ethnic groups of the district at a meeting held at the Conference Hall of the DC office,Udalguri on June 9 . The meeting was convened by Thaneswar Malakar,DC,Udalguri who has also been known as a writer. It needs mention that the meeting was urgently convened keeping in mind the on going issue of a section of non Bodos opposing separate Bodoland state on one hand and Various Bodo organisations demanding Bodoland on the other. Speakers of AASU,AJYCP,AASA,AMSU,AGSU and Bengali Federation expressed concern at the incidents of miscreants demanding extortion money from non Bodos in interior places which had terrorised common people. But they also declared that they had full support for BTAD and nothing to say against Bodo leaderships of BFF or ABSU. They requested administration to control antisocial elements belonging to any community at any cost. Senior citizens namely Manik Sarma, President,Asom Sahitya Sabha,Udalguri;Nilakanta Gayari,President,Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Udalguri; Benjamin Soren,Advisor,Santhali Sahitya Sabha,Udalguri; Rameswar Boro,President,district,BJP; Bristi Basumatari,President,district Congress remarked that they respect democratic movements but such agitations must never create problems for common people. Movements of Bodos,Koch Rajbongshis or Adivasi must be observed in democratic manner. Such agitations must not be against any community or religion. All the senior speakers requested organisations not to give band calls which effects students and common people badly.
Bonjar Daimary,Deputy Speaker of BTC expressed concern at the present situation in the district as well as in some parts of BTC. According to him a section of politically motivated anti BTC people living outside BTC have been creating terror among non Bodos residing peacefully in BTC. He said that law and order was a state affair,but he would discuss the matter with BTC chief. Mitha Ram Basumatari,EM,BTC in his speech assured that grievances of non tribal people would be given priority and grass root level meetings would be arranged to train VCDC and TCLCC presidents for fair distribution of benefits. Jagadish Sarkar,MCLA,BTC also addressed the meeting. Debojit Deuri, SP,Udalguri explained how rumour could ignite communal clashes out of a small non related incident. He said that strict action would be taken against anybody including surrendered or cease fire groups who breaks law or terrorise people.Journalist Narayan Deka and ABSU advisor Dipen Boro also spoke on the occasion.
In his concluding speech,DC Thaneswar Malakar declared that district administration would do anything to control communal clashes and to maintain law and order. He requested Deputy Speaker and EM of BTC present to fill the vacant posts of Gaonbura and Mondals in the district so as to speed up the process of public relation. The DC specially requested all the organisations to stay away from band calls and to exempt educational institutions from any types of agitations.He appealed media persons not to publish sensitive news in a hurry. A law and order monitoring committee was formed with Bonjar Daimary,Dy Speaker,BTC as president;ADC(Adm) Udalguri as Secretary; Gunajit Das,Jourmalist as Joint Secretary and representatives of all organisations as its member.
