19 wild elephants die in Assam in just 90 days
The unfortunate and tragic deaths of two wild elephants in just two days in Udalguri district in Assam (India) have raised serious concern among wildlife loving people of Udalguri.In the first incident.a seven years old male wild elephant was found dead at Jorapukhuri village near Hatigar tea garden on November 20.The baby elephant was found lying dead in a drain in turtle. According to information village people were chasing a herd of wild elephant numbering more than fifty the previous night. While running away the baby fell in a watery drain and succumbed due to stampede.According to DFO Udalguri the incident occurred while people were chasing wild elephants after forest personnel had left at midnight on November 19.In another incident a thirty years old female wild elephant found dead at Bharla river bed near Bongurum in Udalguri district on November 20.According to an eye witness,the dead female wild elephant bore several grievous injury marks on her body.MK Sarma,DFO, Dhansiri Forest Division,Udalguri told that the front leg of the elephant was found fractured and the tail tip was chopped off causing profuse bleeding resulting its death before veterinary treatment could be administered.The DFO further said that due to non availability of emergency veterinary rescue team in the district they had to wait support from Kaziranga NP,Manas NP or from Guwahati Zoo which take much time."Even tranquilizing a wild animal is difficult here because of the absence of a shooter. Local veterinary doctors are not trained in shooting with a dirt gun.Short term training courses of shooting for local veterinarians would solve some problem",he said.So far 19 wild elephants have been killed or died in Assam during last ninety days only.Seven wild elephants died in Udalguri district in 2017.

Media workshop for new generation journalists held at Khoirabari
A day long media workshop for younger generation was organized at Khoirabari in Udalguri district on November 19.The media workshop was organized jointly by Khoirabari Press Club and NE Live web portal at Khoirabari college auditorium.Hundreds of young people starting their career in journalism from various places of the state namely-Guwahati,Tinsukia, Biswanath Chariali, Nagaon,Dibrugarh,Tezpur,Goreswar, Mangaldai, Lakhimpur etc attended the workshop which was presided over by Dhiren Mahaliya, president of Khoirabari Press Club.A few senior journalists of Udalguri district also attended the workshop as the resource persons.Lighting of the lamp by Maheswar Boro,MLA, Kalaigaon LAC marked the beginning of the media workshop which was later inaugurated by Jagadish Sarkar, EM,BTC. Dipen Deka,Chief Editor,NE Live in his welcome speech thanked young generation journalists for choosing journalism as their career.A periodic news journal "Journalists Barta" ( BTC Edition )was formally launched on the occasion.Senior journalist Jayanta Kumar Das formally inaugurated the new news paper. Jayanta Pratim Das, Associate Editor of News Time,Assam addressed the session as the appointed speaker.Senior journalists-Jayanta Kumar Das,(The Assam Tribune local correspondent); Babu Rabha Hakasam,(Asomiya Pratidin); Rabi Ram Boro,( PTI ) addressed the house as the resourced persons.All the speakers requested new generation journalists to follow social ethics and to be honest in the profession.They also said that nothing such news which could trigger communal violence be published in print,electronic or social media platforms. Aryabhatta Science competition held at Kalaigaon
The block level science competition of Aryabhatta Science Centre,Kalaigaon was held at Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School,Kalaigaon on November 9 with a day long programme.Students of various schools of Tangla and Kalaigaon area participated in the science based model, extempore speech and poster drawing competitions which was sponsored by ASTEC (Assam Science Technology & Environment Council) Guwahati. Udalguri DC appeals peace during NRC Draft publication
A community level meeting on NRC draft publication was held at Kalaigaon on November 8.The meeting was held at the Gaonbura Bhawan at the premises of Kalaigaon Revenue Circle Office at 12 noon.Addressing government and police officials,representatives of various political parties,student organizations,senior citizens,gaonbura and media personal,Dilip Kumar Das,Deputy Commissioner and DRCR of Udalguri district spoke on NRC Draft publication under the strict supervision of Supreme Court of India.He said that utmost care had been taken so that not a single name of genuine citizen is deleted or names of foreign nationals who had come to India after 1971 are deleted in the draft to be published on December 31 this year.The DC requested people of all the communities to cooperate with the administration for the publication of NRC draft in Udalguri district.Deputy Commissioner Das requested all not to be carried away by rumors or misleading social media updates.Leaflets were distributed among people where it was clearly mentioned that only Indian citizens will be included in NRC with 24 March,1971 as the cut off date in accordance with the provisions of Assam Accord.It is further mentioned that there would ne no categorization such as original inhabitants or otherwise shall be made in draft NRC and final NRC.In case of names which are not included in Draft NRC list,applicants will have opportunity by way of claiming immediately after publication of Draft NRC for a period up to thirty days,where in people can fill their claim for inclusion of their names as per prescribed form with necessary documents. Speaking on the occasion Yuvraj Singh,Addl Superintendent of police,Udalguri declared that no injustice to any one would be done.But violation of law by individual or organizations would be dealt with firmly.The meeting was also addressed by Anupam Choudhury,ADC;DN Hazarika,ADC,Udalguri;Biraj Barua,Circle Officer cum CRCR,Kalaigaon Revenue Circle etc.

Unemployment forcing youths to join insurgency in Udalguri
The formation of new extremist organozations in Udalguri district in BTAD has raised several questions on the prevailing of peace in the area as has been claimed by governments in Dispur and Kokrajhar.The rampant public allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds by contractors backed by politicians and officials have made common people disappointed.The recently developed political tussle between ruling BJP and BPF has also created instability.With zero jobs available both in public and private sectors,youths (both skilled and unskilled) have lost hope of a decent life started falling prey to anti social elements including extremist outfits and illegal traffickers.The exodus of Udalguri youths to other states of India for low level jobs has been increasing.Number of rescue of girls and women from illegal traffickers have also been alarming.Unfortunately the people in power have been putting a deaf ear to the alarming bells.The recent apprehension of Dipak Basumatary,Secretary of newly formed NFFB (National Freedom Fighters of Bodoland) raised another curtain.Udalguri police and jawans of 14 Dogra Regiment stationed at Borongajuli in Udalguri apprehended the out fit leader after several hours operation.He was apprehended at the premises of Khoirabari Raas Mela last Sunday while extorting money from traders.A loaded pistol and ammunition were recovered from his possession.

Tangla paid tribute to Dr.Bhupen Hazarika
People of greater Tangla town paid herty tribute to Dr.Bhupen Hazarika on his sixth death anniversary at Tangla. A day long programme to commemorate the the rich contributions of the legend was organized here at Tangla H.S playground on November 5. It was held under the joint aegis of Bhupen Hazarika Smriti Suraksha Samity,Tangla and Ambikagiri Rai Chowdhury Sangha.Prabhat Pheri in the morning marked the beginning of the celebration followed by lightning of lamps in front of the portait of Dr.Hazarika.A number of people headed by Binoy Kumar Medhi offered floral tribute to the image of the music legend.An all religious prayer and Naam-Prasanga was also held.A congregation of nearly 1500 school children and women sang the immortal song 'Manuhe Manuhor Babe'.The cultural rally was taken out through the streets of Tangla town and troupes representing Rabha, Adivasi, Assamese,Tiwa community took part in the rally.Various competitions were arranged for students and children.In the evening hundreds of earthen lamp were lighted paying rich tribute to the legend.

On the occasion of the 6th death anniversary of Dr.Bhupen Hazarika,the legendary music maestro of India,a permanent manch was inaugurated at Kalaigon named as Dr.Bhupen Hazarika Manch on November 5 with a day long programme.The permanent manch was constructed under MGNREGA schemce at the premises of Kalaigaon Pragotisil Jonomanch.Assam singing icon Jubin Garg formally inaugurated the manch in a public meeting which was presided over by DN Hazarika, SDO (Civil), Bhergaon cum president of the celebration committee. 548th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak celebrated at Tangla
People of Udalguri and Darrang districts celebrated 548th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Deb at Tangla in Udalguri district recently on November 4 with a day long programme along with the rest of the state.
Devotees from entire Darrang and Udalguri district gathered to mark the celebration of the 548th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak,the founder of the Sikh faith. The celebrations started with a recitation of the Sikh religious book,the Guru Granth Sahib.After completing the recitation of the Granth kirtan hymns were chanted .Nishan Sahib a Sikh triangular flag made of silk cloth,with a tassel at its end was also hoisted by the devotees.The ceremony was followed by special prayers for promoting unity and integrity among people.In the langar special delicacies prepared in the community kitchen were served were people irrespective of their caste, community,religionfeasted together,” said Jarnail Singh Pradhan of the Guruduwara.It needs mentioning that it is the only Guruduwara in Udalguri and Darrang district established way back in 1957.

People evict illicit liquor at Hattigar in Udalguri
People of Hattigar in Udalguri district recently launched massive drive against illicit liquor vendors in and around Hattigar villages on October 31.Illicit liquor,illicit trafficking and with hunting etc have been a few major social menaces in the tea garden dominated Hattigar area for years.Taking advantage of poor economic status, illiteracy,unemployment etc,anti social elements have been exploiting villagers to much disappointment of honest people of the society.Ranjit Tanti,principal,Bright Star English School,Hattigar and a leading social activist of the district told this correspondent that even after several warnings given to the liquor vendors to close their activities,the educated youths of Hattigar including ACMS, AASAA,ATTSA had to come out with a strong pledge and commitment to wipe out the illicit practice in the entire area.Supplying,sellingbuying,and consuming of illicit had been totally banned in the area."Our youths are trying day and night to motivate people,trying to create awareness among them falling easy prey to anti social elements.Our boys are trying to make the villagers understand to live a healthy life,to educate children and also to keep the environment clean",so said Ranjit Tanti.It is also learned that Officer-in-Charge of Paneri Police Station and tea garden management offered cooperation in evicting the illicit liquor vendors.But the role of excise department has been criticized by most locals saying that excise people were interested in collecting more money only from the liquor vendors.

Tangla student to present science project in the national NCSC in Gujrat
People of Udalguri have welcomed Ishan Barua of Asom Jatiya Bidyalaya, Tangla,who will present his science project in the NCSC (National Children Science Congress) national meet to be held in Gujrat at Gandhinagar from December 28 to 31.Ishan has been selected as a member of the 25 member Assam NCSC team at the state level NCSC meet held at Kokrajhar from October 25 to 28 for his project titled "Preservation of tomato by indigenous method",which was appreciated by scientists at Kokrajhar session.Ishan is the son of Nabajit Barua and Lanita Barua,residents of Ward No 4 in Tangla town in Udalguri district.Gunidhar Boro,principal and Manjul Barua teacher of Asom Jatiya Bidyalaya.Tangla expressed satisfaction at the selection of Ishan for national level session.According to them the selection of Ishan would inspire more students of the district to participate in scientific activities in future.The Udalguri District Journalist Union and Aryabhatta Science Centres of Udalguri district committee congratulated Ishan Barua for his selection in the state child scientist team.
