Female tiger killed in Orang National Park in Assam

A 5 years old female Royal Bengal Tiger was found dead near Panchnoi river under Camp No.2 of Orang National Park on 25.12.2010 around 4 pm. The carcass was detected by the staff of the said camp in a dense patch of tora vegetation while patrolling on foot. The carcass bore no injury signs and nothing unusual was noticed at the place of occurrence and surrounding area. The spot is less than a km from the Park boundary. Entire area was searched using elephants as well as on foot for some clues like kill but nothing was found. The carcass was brought to the Range HQ and the post mortem and disposal of the carcass was carried out as per the protocol. The team comprised S K Daila,DFO,Orang NP; Salim Ahmed, Range Officer,Orang NP; Firoz Ahmed, of National Tiger Conservation Authority; Kishore Sarma, of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau; Govinda Kalita,VAS and local NGO Otters. The team also inspected the place of occurrence and interacted with the concerned camp staff yesterday.The post mortem report has cited suspected poisoning as the cause of death but has recommended forensic examination for confirmation. Samples of vital organs have been collected and will be sent to State Forensic Science Laboratory at Guwahati. A high alert has been sounded in the entire National Park following the death of the tigress. This morning around 4 am the Park staff has arrested a person from Nichlamari village for capturing and possessing a wild buffalo calf in his house ,just outside the boundary wall of the NP.The calf was just two or three days old.

Silver jubilee celebration of Bishnu-jyoti cultural group concludes at Kalaigaon

The silver jubilee celebration of Bishnu-Jyoti cultural group,which was established at Chengapather near Kalaigaon in 1985 came to an end on December 19. A few distinguished actors,actresses and singers of Assam attended the closing ceremony besides high ranking officials and scholars of the state.The silver jubilee celebration had started on December 17 at 9 am with the hoisting of the flag by Maheswar Boro,MLA,Kalaigaon followed by the release of the souvenir named “Mahiruh” edited by Hiren Deka.On the second day on December 18,various competitions were held for the children followed by a seminar on the life and thoughts of Jyotiprasad and Bishnu Rabha.The seminar was conducted by noted writer Idris Ali.Dr Surya Das,Asstt.Director AIR,Guwahati and Loknath Das attended the seminar as the invited speaker.At 2 pm noted singer Jiten Deka had an interactive session with the people which was conducted by Sat Ram Deka, secretary of Darrang Zilla Sahitya Parishad.A colorful

cultural procession marked the begining of the concluding days programme on December 19 at 10 am which was flagged off by Maheswar Boro,MLA,Kalaigaon.Noted singer Dr.Anima Choudhuri inagurated the open session at 2 pm which was presided over by Maheswar Boro,MLA,Kalaigaon.On the occasion she said that the cultural unity of Assam had suffered setbacks due to political and social misunderstanding among various ethnic groups of NE region.She also remarked that the so called speedy social changes could very much affect a few ethnic cultures of the region.Lovely Assamese actress Barakha Rani cheered the crowd by performing a Bihu dance in the tune of Dhol and Pepa.

Noted writer and Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district Thaneswar Malakar in his speech as the invited guest said that civilizations of the world had been lost;but not the cultural identity were never lost.Highlighting on the life and thought of both Jyotiprasad Agarwalla and Bishu Rabha,he said that both had in them brilliant qualities.According to him Bishnu Rabha had been a mathematician and physicists too,who could have given Assam much more in the field of culture and literature had he not been involved with so many activities.On the present day cultural life of Assamese society,he remarked that changes of taste had been seen in Assam,where cultural functions had to be arranged with police protection,otherwise of which unruly youths could have demaged the stage as well as the desks and benches shouting wild cries.
The open session was also addressed by noted singers namely-Khagen Mahanta,Archana Mahanta; actor Biju Phookan and his wife;Bishnu Rabha's son Prithvi Rabha;BTC EM, Lwmsrao Daimari; BTC MCLAs Jagadish Sarkar and Dandi ram Rabha;social worker Mukunda Ram Choudhuri; Tarun Azad Deka,secretary of the silver jubilee celebration committee anchored the proceedings of the day. A few distinguished singers namely-Khagen Mahanta,Archana Mahanta,Bibhu Ranjan Choudhuri,Pranita Baishya Medhi etc performed in the cultural programme in the evening which was inaugurated by DN Hazarika,Circle Officer Harisinga Revenue Circle,Tangla.

Udalguri DC pleads powers to control administration

The district administrations in all the four districts in BTC area have been facing serious set backs due to the curtailment of most of the powers generally enjoyed by other Deputy Commissioners of the country.Most of the powers of the DCs had been transferred directly to BTC authority under sixth schedule of the constitution,there by making the DCs just an administrate heads without power.The DC s cannot control any officers serving under him in BTC districts as they had to look after law and order only.The newly posted Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district ,Thaneswar Malakar,who has also been known as a writer said so in a crowded meeting at sub-divisional HQ Bhergaon on December 20.The meeting was organized on the occasion of distribution of grant-in-aids to the beneficiaries.The meeting was attended by Rihon Daimari, Minister,PHE,Assam;MLAs,BTC Ems,MCLAs,high ranking officials and media personals. Presiding over the meeting the DC also said that he would try his best to solve all the problems of the people of the district.He requested the BTC authority to grant normal powers to DC s serving in BTC so as to control government officials,who had ben evading their duties in the pretext of engagement with BTC authority at Kokrajhar.According to him the departmental heads may report directly to Kokrajhar without informing the DC.He suggested that the DCs must be made aware of the movement of all departmental heads.

MP Sarma,Project Director,DRDA,Udalguri while addressing the people stresed the need for

speedy development of seven lakhs sixty four thousand people living in the district.Maheswar Boro,MLA,Kalaigaon and Chairman of DRDA,Udalguri declared that whatever could not have been achieved in the last fifty years were made possible in just five years during Con-BPF rule.In his concluding speech as the chief guest,Minister Rihon Daimari remarked that a wave of change had been noticed in BTC;but at the same time he requested people not to put undue pressure on the government officers and contractors by demanding donations,which he said would slow down the process of development and welfare of the people.The Minister declared that the construction of the remaining portion of the MB road (declared as state highway )from Kalaigaon to Bhutiachang would be completed in the coming year with an amount of rupees 22 crore.

The meeting was also addressed by Lwmsrao Daimari,EM,BTC.Distinguished guests namely Jagadish Sarkar,Rati Ram Boro both BTC MCLAs,Debajyoti Dutta,ADC,Bhergaon,all the Circle Officers and BDOs attended the meeting.More than three thousand people were present in the meeting.DN Hazarika,Circle Officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle,Tangla offered the vote of thanks at the end before the grant-in-aids were distributed (14 govt departments) to beneficiaries by the minister.
