Kargil Gunners organise youth festival at Tangla (Assam)


After the runaway success of the ‘Udalguri Youth Festival’ during the past year, the Kargil Gunners of Red Horns Division in collaboration with ‘Janasewa’, a Tangla based news paper,have launched another festival for the youth and students at Tangla in Udalguri district. The three day festival being organised from the 18th to 20th Dec 2011was inaugurated with hoisting of flag by DN Hazarika,Circle Officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle on December 18. It has been a multi-event festival comprising of Book Fair,essay writing,quiz ,modern dance & singing competition, poetry, Mr & Ms Tangla,best Physique competitions etc. Along with tree plantation, and a Career Mela. The Army with the local press has targeted all sections of the youth across all age groups as well as focussed on both the body and mind in selecting the events for the festiva.While the word smiths made a beeline for the essay writing competition, a large number of entries from boys and girls have been received for both the Mr and Ms Tangla and Body Building competitions. The wave of change for peace is clearly evident in this business town of Udalguri district where the Army and ‘Janaseva’ have joined hands in organising this three day festival which is witnessing overwhelming participation by the youth of the district.


Speaking on the occasion, Col.Sunil Upadhyay,Commanding Office,Kargil Gunners exhorted the Youth to step up and endeavour to realize their dreams and potential. He reminded the gathering that the youth were the future of the nation and their sound grooming would lay the foundations for a buoyant future for the nation. On the occasion homage was also paid to the jewels of Assam Dr.Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Goswami as part of the opening ceremony.It may be recalled that the Kargil Gunners have been at the forefront in providing opportunities to the youth by organising a variety of events including the first ever ‘Udalguri Youth Festival’ which remains to date the largest ever event for youth organised in this district.Apart from these,under he banner of Op Sadbhavana the unit of Red Horns Division has undertaken numerous infrastructure and educational related activities to promote national integration, peace and education in the society.These activities apart from combating the scourge of terrorism have endeared the Red Horns Division to the general public and ushered in an era of peace in the district.

Kati Ram Nath :a tribute



A 75 years old LP school teacher of a remote village, Nizdola in Udalguri district,who had been moving from village to village armed with all his hand made scientific gadgets,trying to make children understand science and machines passed off silently in his village unnoticed by so called civilized society on October 28 2011. Born on October 1941 late Kati Ram Nath had joined service as an LP school teacher at Kalikhola LP school in 1961 and was retired from service on September 30 in 1999 as the headmaster of Binapani Nizdola LP school.Kati Ram Nath had never been wanting to confined himself within the walls of his home rooms and children,rather he thought that his mission was to make science popular among village children. He successfully developed a bamboo made rikshaw in 1957 followed by a bamboo made bi-cycle in 1967.Among his working models two bamboo made bi-cycles,model showing days and nights,hand made compass,solar and lunar eclipse models,solar system,calculators,silk woven hand made machine and rice thrasher are worth mentioning. Other models like replica of Tajmahal and Saraighat bridge were simply marvelous.Kati Ram Nath had won several prestigious awards in his life including- State Teachers Award in 1990;awards by All Assam Primary Teachers Association in 1966; Udalguri district Excellence Award in Public Service in January,2009 etc. He also wrote two books namely- 'Jene Kukur tene tangon' and 'Kuhi Path Sahayika' in 1984.A few days back before is death,he told media persons that he could have done more if had been encouraged by government officials and politicians. Noted writer cum Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district Thaneswar Malakar has expressed his deep condolence at the sudden death of the silent science worker on October 29,2011. Kati Ram Nath left behind his wife Ambika Devi,three sons namely-Nripen, Lkahikanta, Jadumoni and two daughters Pratibha and Anima.I pray God to grant eternal peace to the departed soul of Kati Ram Nath.

Science model exhibition draws crowd at Tangla in Assam

Arunodoi Academy,Tangla organized a grand science exhibition cum competition at Tangla on October 22 and 23 on the occasion of Foundation Day of the school. Dipankar Saharia,Regional Coordinator,TERI formally inaugurated the two days programme on October 22 at 10 AM. DN Hazarika, Circle Officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle lighted the sacred lamp before its inauguration. On the occasion Dipankar Saharia recalled his childhood days at Tangla and thanked organizers for arranging the exhibition. Total 154 numbers of students presented 61 numbers of attractive science models to much delight of the people present. Moreover more than 14 numbers of old science related items like old Swiss clock,Gramophone player, coins, costumes of Koch kingdom etc were also displayed by the students. A few working science models like-Use of wasted kinetic energy of electric fans to produce energy; Launching of space craft with the help of earth's magnetic field prepared by Upamanyoo Das and Arnab Paul; Solar air cooker by Chayanika Rabha and Hemangsing Basumatari; Electricity from Sea Waves by Atlanta Das and Puja Rabha;Solar cum Wind Vehicle by Enush Daimari and Bitopan Deka could very much impress organizers and people present. More than thousand people including students,teachers and a few distinguished people namely-Mridula Saharia,Chairperson,State Woman Commission,Assam;Diganta Kumar Sarma, Secretary, Tangla Press Club visited the science models.
On the concluding day on October 23, prizes were distributed to the winners in the open session which was presided over by social worker Keshab Chandra Boro. Pranabjyoti Das, one of the key organizers welcomed all the guests before felicitation to the guests. Jayanta Kumar Das,District Coordinator,NCSC,Udalguri released the souvenir “Arunodian” edited by Napolean Daimari,Principal,Arunodoi Academy, Tangla. He requested parents and guardians to create scientific temperament in the society so as to remove blind belief and superstition from the minds of the people. Dr.Buddhin Hazarika ,science activist and senior lecturer of Mangaldai College thanked organizers for the science exhibition. He explained on how to make science study interesting and joyful. Dr.Kamala Bora,NCSC activist and senior lecturer of Mangaldai College also attended the programme as invited guest.Speaking on the occasion he remarked that applicability is the best quality of learning. He thanked students for presenting 61 Nos of excellent science model at Tangla. On the necessity of more and more plantation,he remarked that an 50 years old tree could produce oxygen worth 25 lakhs of rupees. Chief guest of the day,Dr.Kailash Chandra Chamua,in his speech remarked that such ivents would very much help in removing blind belief and superstition from the mind of the common people.According to him following of responsibilities very much starts at home only. In the senior group- Upamanyoo Das and Arnab Paul won first prize for their model “Launching of Spacecraft with Earth's Magnetic Field”; Kishore Deka and Rajsekhar Das won second prize for their model “Equilibrium” while Chinmoy Kachari and Sagar Baro won third prize for “No bill House” model. In junior group- Atlanta Das and Puja Rabha (Electricity from Sea Waves) won first ;Bercillona Das and Smriti Barua (Electric Magnet) won second;Hridoy Sarma and Debojit Das (Erruption of Volcano) won third prize. Napolean Daimari,Principal,Arunodoi Academy offered vote of thanks at the end.

Success of Udalguri quiz students appreciated




The success of Udalguri students,which won third prize in the All Assam Inter district quiz on new and renewable energy held at Silpagram, Guwahati has been appreciated by people of the district.The state level science quiz was organized by Bharat Jana Bigyan Jatha,Assam branch in association with Assam Energy Development Agency,Guwahati at Silpagram, on August 19 2011,on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas. Selected students from 26 districts of Assam participated in the inter-district quiz conducted by Sanjeev Goswami. Dr.SK Choudhury, Director ASTEC formally inaugurated the competition on August 19 in the Silpagram auditorium.Tarun Gogoi,Chief Minister,Assam gave away the prizes to the winning districts namely-Nagaon,Dhemaji and Udalguri for winning first three places respectively at a central function held at Cotton College auditorium on August 20.
Udalguri district was represented by Rojika Basumatary of Sacred Heart School,Udalguri and Kunal Sharma of RAME School, Udalguri.under the guidance of Jayanta Kumar Das and Pinky Dutta.

New VTC computer building inaugurated at Kalaigaon in Assam



The newly built computer building of Vocational Training Centre (VTC),Kalaigaon has been inaugurated at Kalaigaon on May 19.Major Arvind Kumar of 2 Field Regiment under Red Horns Division formally inaugurated the new building in presence of Major Sammir Bankankar and other distinguished people.The construction was done under the supervision of Lt Col S Giri of 2 Field Regiment,Mangaldai.On the occasion Major Arvind Kumar requested people of Kalaigaon particularly students and youths of the locality to take advantage of the VTC services so as to make computer science as a profession.He also said that Indian Army had ben helping the people of Assam for all round development.According to him with the improvement of law and order situation in the state,army had been concentrating more on welfare activities. Jayanta Kumar Das,Asstt.Secy,VTC Kalaigaon in his welcome speech gratefully remembered the contribution of 65 Field Regiment and 2 Field Regiment under Red Horns Division for the construction of the VTC at Kalaigaon.It is worth mentioning that noted freedom fighter and social worker late Pani Ram Das had donated 2 bighas of land for the construction of VTC in 2009.The VTC has been offering training in various trades like computer,electrical weilding etc since its establishment in 2009.Distinguished persons namely social woker Kami Ram Saharia,Mouzadar Kamal Prasad Sarma, gaonburah Jona Ram Tamuli,journalists Imran Hussain and Rabindra Rabha etc were present at the inaugural ceremony.More than three hundred students and teachers from near by schools also attended the ceremony where a few spectacular cultural items were also performed by the students.

 On the occasion of first Udalguri Youth Festival,2011, pageant show was arranged on April 25 in Harimu Bhavan.Boys and girls of Udalguri district showed their talents by participating in large numbers.Uryed Narzari and Hemasri Boro showed their talents by winning the coveted Mr. Udalguri and Miss Udalguri title.

 The prizes with crowns and medals on the occasion to Mr. Udalguri and Miss Udalguri and first and second runners ups for the titles were presented by Brig. VK Tiwari of Red Horns Division, Colonel Sunil Upadhyay, commanding officer of 315 Field Regiment (Kargil), Mrs. VK Tiwari, Mrs. S Updhayay, Thaneswar Malakar, deputy commissioner of Udalguri district and MK Gautam, commanding officer of 149 battalion of CRPF respectively.

Tangla students excel in quiz and debate at Udalguri Youth Festival


The Udalguri Youth Festival,which was inaugurated on April 23 by Maj.Gen NS Ghei,GOC,Red Horns Division,witnessed more spectacular events like inter school debate and quiz competitions on April 24. Thaneswar  Malakar,Deputy Commissioner, Udalguri inaugurated both the competitions at Harimu Bhavan in presence of Col.Sunil Upadhyaya, Commanding Officer of 315 Field Regiment (KARGIL).In debate section Donbosco School,Tangla and Tangla College won gold and silver medal respectively.In inter school quiz competition,six schools namely-JNV,Kalaigaon; JNV,Udalguri; Arunodoi Academy, Tangla; TEMHS, Tangla; Donbosco School,Tangla and RAMES, Udalguri took part in the final round. TEMHS,Tangla students won the gold medal while Arunodoi Academy, Tangla students won silver medal.Jayanta Chakravorty,lecturer of Tangla College and Director of TEMHS conducted the quiz competition. 

 Thaneswar Malakar, Deputy Commissioner, Udalguri gave away the medals to the winners at the end.On the occasion he requested the students of Udalguri district to study hard and to keep note of matters science & technology,nature & wildlife and to try to solve a few problems of their own for a better future.

Colourful inauguration of Udalguri Youth Festival-2011


The first Udalguri Youth Festival,2011 has been inaugurated at Udalguri on April 23 at 10 AM.The five days festival has been organised by 315 Field Regiment (KARGIL) under the aegis of Red Horns Division and in association with Udalguri district administration at Deputy Commissioner's parade ground,Udalguri. Col.Sunil Upadhaya,Commanding Officer,315 Field regiment introduced the distinguished to the people while Brig.VK Tiwari,Commander,21 Artillery Brigade welcomed all including distinguished guests.On behalf of the Udalguri district administration,noted writer cum Deputy Commissioner,Udalguri, Thaneswar Malakar,felicitated Maj.Gen NS Ghei,GOC,Red Horns Division,Rangia and his wife with gamocha and xarai.On the occasion Brig.VK Tiwari expalined about the programme which will contibue till April 26.

Declaring Udalguri Youth Festival open,Maj.Gen NS Ghei,GOC,Red Horns Division thanked 315 Field Regiment and Udalguri district administration for organising the spectacular event at Udalguri for the first time.He said that such programmes would provide platform for students so as to expose their talents to the world. According to him tiugh competitions alone would bring perfection. Thaneswar Malakar,Deputy Commissioner of the district thanked Maj Gen NS Ghei and Brig.VK Tiwari for taking up all the welfare schemes for the students and people of Udalguri. Mrs.Manpreet Ghei,Convenor of Family Welfare Organisation,Red Horns Division inaugurated the science model exhibition at 11 AM.

The programme will continue till April 26,which will include cultural,sports and literary competitions.Students from schools namely – Arunodoi Academy,Tangla;Tangla English Medium HS;Donbosco School,Tangla;Maharishi Vidya Mandir,Tangla;Arunodoi Acadeny Junior College, Tangla;JNV Kalaigaon;JNV Udalguri;Diamond English HS,Udalguri;Sacred Heart School,Udalguri ;RAMES Udalguri displayed a few spectacular science models to much delight of the people as wel as the guests.Rihon Daimari,Minister,PHE,Assam;Santias Kunjur,EM,BTC;Mitha Ram Basumatari, EM,BTC;Debajit Deuri,SP,Udalguri;Loknath Mahanta,SDO (Civil),Bhergaon etc attended the programme as the distinguished guests.

Guwahati Planetarium upgraded to Digital Hybrid



Guwahati Planetarium was inaugurated on 17 August in 1994.The opto-mechanical instrumental system was then acquired through international bidding process was also the state-of-the-art system prevailing at that time.Guwahati planetarium has recently been upgraded to Hybrid digital type (first in India and second in Asia) with an amount of rupees six crore.The upgradation was supervised by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC),Guwahati.The state-of-the-art Hybrid Planetarium System of GOTO,Japan consting of Chrones-II-optomachanical starfield projector which not only creates realistic sky but also millions of realistic stars generated through two powerful Digital Video System.
The Hybrid system in Guwahati Planetarium is Indias first ever venture.People will witness beautiful full dome video images never seen before in India.The show includes Guwahati city including Kamakhya temple,Bihu dance and mighty Brahmaputra river.People now can see details of the prominent stars and constellations visible from Guwahati.The show further explains scientific facts namely the Origin of the Universe,the Big Bang theory,Formation of Galaxies and our Solar System by using simultaneously Chronos II opto machinical projector and powerful digital video system.Other breathtaking Space Show namely-Cosmic Collisions will be the first time in India.Babul Bora,Curator of Guwahati planetarium told proudly that audiences would feel the ground shake beneath them as they are supposed to experience a thrilling recreation of the Meteorite impact that hastened the end of the Age of Dinosaurs millions years ago and cleared the way for mamals.Another dramatic sequence highlights a frightening future scenarion where humanity desperately attempts to divert the path of an oncoming “doomsday” asteroid headed on a collision course with Earth.Curator Babul Bora also remarked that such Hybrid show is not available in any planetarium in India.

New software for Dairy Co-operative Societies of Assam





A software named “PIIM” has recently been developed for use in various dairy co-operaive societies and has been successfully applied by the Department of Dairy Development, Govt. Of Assam under RKVY (Rastriya Krishi Vikash Yogana).The department has applied the newly developed software for efficient functioning of the many dairy co-operative societies in the state. The software was developed by Arindam Mani Das, Technology Consultant, Centre for Humanistic Development. PIIM (an Algerian word for milk) is an MIS(Management Information System) software and it will enable the diary cooperative societies of the various districts of Assam to generate reports and records properly. Arindam Mani Das is the grandson of nonagenarian freedom fighter and social worker Pani Ram Das of Kalaigaon.
People of Kalaigaon have expressed satisfaction at his success.

Fashion and designing has now been drawing attention of young people all over India,a few creative young people of Assam too have established themselves well in the field.But still it’s not been so easy to arrange fashion shows in district level.People still consider it an affair of glamor models.

Juri Sarma,daughter of Sarat Sarma and Phuleswari Devi of Mangaldai in Assam successfully arranged a fashion design show of kids at Mangaldai Natya Mandir on July 19 and had won much needed public appreciation.The show titled “Mr.& Miss of Darrang could very much impress people of Mangaldai. The show also acted positively in removing misconceptions on fashion and design. On the occasion, Juri Sarma presented fifty pairs of her attractive design work to the delight of people.

Jyotishman Sarma, Hitali Sarma Barua won Master kid of Darrang and Miss kid of Darrang respectively, while Farhad Adnan and Kamalina Choudhury won first and second runners up respectively. Noted choreographer Prasanta Bordoloi, international fame dancer Bhanu Deka and designer Preeti Saloi attended the show as the judges while Juri Sarma anchored the proceeding. A total of 50 boys and girls participated in the event.Later Talking to this scribe ,Juri Sarma told that government of Assam must introduce fashion and designing as compulsory subject in schools,which according to her would help boys and girls earn self sufficiency in life.
